What does this page mean for you as a reader?
This page explains who owns Canada Scope, how we are funded, and how we keep editorial decisions separate from commercial interests. You can use it to verify our transparency, understand our business model, and know exactly where to turn if you have questions about sponsorship or ownership.
Trustworthy journalism depends on readers knowing what influences the newsroom. That is why we publish this information openly. If you ever wonder whether a commercial relationship shaped a story, the details below will help you judge for yourself.
Who ensures the journalism stays independent?
Editorial independence is guaranteed by the fact that no advertiser, sponsor, or owner can dictate what our journalists write. Editor-in-Chief Catherine Roy has final authority over all content and publication decisions, and she reports directly to the publisher only on business matters, never on editorial ones.
Every article goes through a named writer, an editor, and a fact-checker before it appears online. Our editorial policy and fact-checking policy are public. The Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, Andrew Leblanc, handles corrections and source verification. You can meet the full team on our Our Team page.
How is Canada Scope funded?
Canada Scope is funded through display advertising, affiliate links, commercial partnerships, sponsored content, newsletter sponsorships, and content licensing. No single revenue source dominates, and all commercial material is clearly labelled so you can tell it apart from independent journalism.
Affiliate links are disclosed at the point of use. Sponsored content carries a prominent “Sponsored” or “Paid Content” label. Our advertising and affiliate disclosure and sponsored content policy explain exactly how these arrangements work. Commercial relationships never determine editorial conclusions — if a sponsor or advertiser disagrees with a story, they cannot suppress or alter it.
How this works in practice
Imagine we publish a story about the rising cost of groceries in Canada. That story may include an affiliate link to a price-comparison tool or a budget‑tracking app. If you click and buy, Canada Scope may earn a small commission — but the journalist who wrote the article did not choose the story because of that link, and the editor did not adjust any facts to please an advertiser. The story was assigned by Managing Editor Marc Tremblay, fact‑checked by Andrew Leblanc’s team, and approved by Catherine Roy. Meanwhile, a separate sponsored post about a new grocery delivery service sits on the site with a clear “Sponsored” label, and it is reviewed by the same standards team to ensure it does not mislead readers. The two pieces never influence each other.
