This page explains how Canada Scope funds its journalism and how that funding affects what you read. Canada Scope is owned by Northern Beacon Media Inc., an Ontario corporation. We are committed to transparency. Advertising, affiliate links, commercial partnerships, and sponsored content help support our work, but they never determine what we cover or what we conclude. This page is your guide to understanding those relationships.
How is Canada Scope funded?
Canada Scope is funded through display advertising, affiliate links, commercial partnerships, sponsored content, newsletter sponsorships, and content licensing. All sponsored or commercial material is clearly labelled, and affiliate links are disclosed. Our commercial relationships never influence editorial conclusions.
Northern Beacon Media Inc. owns and operates Canada Scope. For a full breakdown of our ownership and funding structure, see the Ownership & Funding page. We also earn revenue from content licensing agreements with other publishers. Every revenue stream is subject to our editorial independence policy, which you can read on our Editorial Policy page.
What are affiliate links and how do they work on this site?
Affiliate links are special URLs that may earn Canada Scope a small commission if you purchase a product or service after clicking them — at no extra cost to you. These links are clearly disclosed near the link or in a note at the bottom of the article.
We use affiliate links only when they are relevant to the story — for example, in a product review or a roundup of recommended books. Editorial staff, including the named writer and the fact-checking team led by Andrew Leblanc, decide whether to include an affiliate link based on editorial merit, not on potential commission. If an article contains affiliate links, it will include a statement such as “This article contains affiliate links. Canada Scope may earn a commission if you make a purchase.” You can find our full policy on Sponsored Content for further detail on how commercial content is marked.
How does display advertising work?
Display advertising on Canada Scope is sold directly by our advertising team or through trusted ad networks. All display ads are clearly separated from editorial content, usually with a label such as “Advertisement” or “Promoted.”
Advertisers have no say in our editorial coverage. Catherine Roy, our Editor-in-Chief, and the editorial team retain final authority over all stories. If you see an advertisement on our site, it does not imply endorsement by our journalists. For questions about display advertising, contact our advertising team at advertising@canadascope.org.
How this works in practice
Consider a typical example: a reader visits our review of a new winter jacket. The article, written by Kevin Sullivan, includes a link to purchase the jacket from a retailer. That link is an affiliate link. When the reader clicks it and buys the jacket, Canada Scope receives a small commission — usually a percentage of the sale price. The reader pays the same price as they would without the link. The decision to include the link was made by Kevin and the fact-checking team based on the jacket’s relevance to the review, not because of any commercial arrangement.
Another example: a sponsored article about energy efficiency. That piece is labelled “Sponsored” at the top, and the sponsor is named. The editorial team, under the oversight of managing editor Marc Tremblay, ensures the content is factual and meets our usual standards. The sponsor does not direct the story’s conclusions.
