The UK’s weather emergency alerts are urgent, government-issued warnings sent directly to mobile phones via cell broadcast technology when the Met Office identifies a risk to life from severe weather. The system, launched in March 2023, covers England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

How do the UK’s weather emergency alerts work?

The Met Office first issues a red or amber weather warning for a specific hazard. If the event poses a direct threat to life, the UK government activates the Emergency Alerts system. A distinctive siren-like tone and vibration accompany a message on the phone’s lock screen, telling recipients what is happening and what action to take. No app or sign-up is required; the alert reaches any compatible device connected to a 4G or 5G network in the affected area.

What types of weather trigger these alerts?

Alerts are reserved for life-threatening situations, including extreme heat, severe flooding, major storms, and heavy snow or ice. Not every Met Office warning triggers an alert – only those where the risk to life is judged to be high. The system is designed to complement existing channels such as television broadcasts and local authority notifications, not replace them.
