How do I submit a takedown request?

To help us process your request quickly, please include:
- Your physical or electronic signature (or that of your authorised representative).
- Identification of the copyrighted work – for images, provide the original file name or a screenshot.
- The specific page URL(s) where the material appears on canadascope.org.
- Your name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address.
- A statement that you have a good‑faith belief the use is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- A statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorised to act on their behalf.
Incomplete notices may delay our response. We may contact you to verify your identity or request additional details.
How this works in practice
Imagine a freelance photographer discovers one of their images used in a Canada Scope article about housing policy. The photo was credited to a stock‑agency but the photographer never licensed it to that agency. They email copyright@canadascope.org with the article URL, a description of the photo, a copy of their copyright registration, and a signed statement of good‑faith belief. Our Standards & Fact‑Checking Lead, Andrew Leblanc, reviews the claim, confirms the licence gap, and removes the image within two business days. The photographer receives a confirmation email and the article is updated with a replacement image.
This example illustrates the process we follow for every valid takedown request. We do not require costly legal letters; a clear, honest notice is enough.
What happens after you submit a request?
We will acknowledge receipt within two business days and investigate the claim promptly. If we determine the material infringes your copyright, we will remove or disable access to it and notify you. If we believe the claim is invalid or that we have a legal right to use the material (for example, under fair‑dealing or a valid licence), we will explain our position and may ask you to provide further evidence.
If you believe a removal was made in error, you may submit a counter‑notice to the same email address. Your counter‑notice must include your contact information, identification of the removed material, and a statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good‑faith belief the material was removed by mistake. We will forward your counter‑notice to the original complainant and, unless they file a court action within ten business days, we may restore the material.
